I have no thoughts regarding pre- and post-coma, but I would agree with you, to the extent that his guitar affected how he played. To this listener, his musical "thinking" underwent gradual change through the 80s - some of the fire, intensity, intelligence and drama left, and was taken over by effects, speed and "convenient" playing, and yes, less precision. Instead of being consistently brilliant, as per 68-74, there were only flashes of brilliance, muddled and sullied by drugs, crummy song selections, overworked originals and retreads, (very few new songs!) and bad health. I'll take his efforts on Alligator or Wolf over anything on Tiger or Rosebud.

I can find good stuff in most shows but I agree about the consistently brilliant point. I am fascinated to read about his gear even if I don't understand a lot of it. This is a good history that I go back to.
